Import Process
Please review the 4 main steps in the import process. If you have any further questions please refer to our FAQ’s page or contact us directly here.
Step 1
Define Your Dream Car and Set Expectations
Start by telling us the specific make, model, and condition of the car you want to import. At 2UP Japan, we’ll assess the feasibility of sourcing your desired vehicle within your budget and timeframe. If we believe it’s achievable, we’ll collect a ¥120,000 yen deposit (for vehicles under ¥5,000,000 yen) to begin the process.
However, if your budget isn’t sufficient to meet your expectations (e.g. a Grade 4 manual JZX100 Chaser for $25,000 AUD/$16,000 USD landed and complied), we’ll be upfront about the challenges. We prioritize transparency and won’t take deposits unless we’re confident in achieving your goals.
Vehicle Selection and Purchase
We’ll provide a list of vehicles scheduled for auction in the upcoming week. Together, we’ll create a shortlist of options you’d like us to inspect on auction day. Since cars in Japan can only be inspected on the morning of the auction, detailed photos and descriptions are essential for making informed decisions.
Once you confirm your maximum bid, we’ll handle the bidding process. If successful, we’ll only invoice you for the winning amount. For instance, if your maximum bid was 2,000,000 yen but we secured the car for 1,600,000 yen, you’ll only pay the 1,600,000 yen.
Step 2
Step 3
Shipping and taxes
After the purchase, we’ll manage all transportation arrangements until your car ships from Japan. Shipping bookings are typically made two weeks in advance, with transit times averaging about four weeks. Once the car nears the destination country (e.g. Australia), the shipping agent will invoice you for shipping costs and applicable taxes.
Compliance and Registration
Once the car arrives, we’ll arrange delivery to a compliance workshop in your state. These workshops ensure your car meets Australian standards and can often assist with registration. Once compliance and registration is complete, your car will be ready to hit the road.
